Pinworm
Summary definition: Severe itchiness around the tail caused by clumps of eggs attached around the anus
Areas affected: Tail, buttocks, around the anus.
Symptoms: Intense localised itching, dishevelled hair at the tail head, hair loss and wounds around the anus
Season: All year round
Short-term care: Specialized worming treatment
Please note: If your horse is scratching only its tail during the summer, it could well be that it has pinworms rather than summer dermatitis.
