  Summary definition: Dry skin attracts large numbers of mites (psoroptes), leading to severe itching on thickly haired areas. Resembles extreme dandruff..

  Areas affected: Mane, ears and tail.

  Season: Humid periods

  Symptoms: Intense localised itchiness, numerous fine, white skin flakes, loss of mane and tail hair.

  Short-term care: Anti-mite treatment and soothing lotion/cream

  Please note: This disease can lead to external ear ache, which may cause the horse to shake its head or carry its ears asymmetrically
